23rd May 2023 – Avon Springs Fishery

The day began with the usual gathering of Mentors and guests munching on the Sausage and Bacon rolls washed own with copious amounts of T&C. After H&S discussions and fishing awareness talks it was off to the waterside. The weather could have been kinder with a distinct chill on the wind but that seemed to make everyone more determined to bag something.

The fish had decided to congregate at the far end of lake 1 so most of the anglers did the same although a few went on to lake 2 kindly offered to us by the owner.

Some cracking fish were promptly caught and weighed in accompanied by smiling faces from many who had never fly fished before so it was game on for the prizes.

The catches were intermittent through the morning but the guests persevered and some very large fish as records will denote continued to come both lakes.

The Biggest Fish was won by Mike Askey at 7lbs 9ozs and his Mentor was Gerald Hunt a wily angler and the Biggest Bag of 10lbs 10ozs was lifted by Ant Atkinson Wiles under the guidance of Paul Savill a demon at the waterside.

A superb lunch was put together by Doug de Vere the caterer and many went back for seconds which speaks volumes of the quality of the food.

Our sincere thanks to all the mentors for a cracking day and to BJ Bawden the fishery owner and his very able associate Malcolm for their hospitality who helped us put another great day in the annals of FFF.
