17th April 2024 – Meon Springs
The first day of a new season started as expected at Meon Springs pretty overcast but the welcoming C&T and rolls and with high spirits and expectations from the guests from AAC we were prepared for the elements.
The banter was great and the camaraderie obvious with plenty of mickey taking whist mingling with the mentors before and after the H&S lecture and my bumbling casting demonstration.
Grub scoffed by all so then with rods in hands it was off to the waterside. In less than 30 minutes the first fish was on its way to the lodge to be weighed in with the smiling captor giving a blow by blow account of how this monster of 2lbs put up such a fight. The captor was visually twitching to get back to the fray and was back to the waterside promptly.
The weather played its usual “I will change when I feel like it” game and we went from brilliant sunshine to arctic wind to squally showers back to sunshine right up to weigh in at 14.00hrs.
Lunch was superbly served in the barn and the prizes presented to the deserving winners
-Biggest Bag (10.8ozs) to Sgt Fletcher
-Biggest Fish (3.6ozs) to Cpl Kershaw
The guests were most vociferous with their praise with the ladies taking quite a number of fish and giving the male contingent a race for the prizes as nobody blanked. It was obvious the day was a resounding success when several of our guests politely inquired when the next event was happening.
Credit must be given the Greg and his team ensuring plenty of fish were to be had if you presented the fly correctly and the catering by Bolly and her associates made sure we were all well fed.
